Voters in the West Dorset District Council area resoundingly rejected the Alternative Vote System and opted for ‘First Past the Post’ for General Elections. The figures were: 67.1% (28,391) voted NO and 32.39 (13,688) voted YES. This was similar to the national figures, where 67% voted NO and 33% voted YES. West Dorset’s turnout (53.06%) was better than the national figure (42.2%).
The Association played its part in the Conservative Party campaign in support of a NO vote. We delivered thousands of leaflets and supported the NO cause at debates across West Dorset. The Lyme Regis Branch led by Eric Tomlinson organised a debate. In Dorchester we had a very successful street stall (pictured below) prior to a debate organised by the YES side. Our speakers were Oliver Letwin MP and Priti Patel MP who more than held their own. Thank you to everyone who helped more often than not in addition to the lots of work in the local election campaign.
